THE COOL BUS - Original Painting

$4,000.00

The Cool Bus began with an ordinary scene behind the Majestic Coffeehouse in downtown Abilene, Texas.

Schuyler Ferris photographed the retired school bus from a dramatic low viewpoint, allowing its broad front end, worn surfaces, and improvised personality to dominate the composition. The surrounding alley, industrial windows, textured pavement, graffiti, and aging architecture gave the scene a distinctly urban character.

In the original photograph, however, the large wall beside the bus felt visually empty. Rather than reproduce the space exactly as it appeared, Schuyler treated it as an opportunity to expand the story of the scene.

The idea began with the image of the Kool-Aid Man bursting through the wall. Although the figure could not literally break into the composition, he became a painted mural instead—towering behind the bus and turning a previously plain surface into one of the painting’s most energetic elements.

The combination of the yellow bus, the oversized red figure, and the heavily worked architecture transforms the alley into something playful, gritty, and theatrical. Deep shadows give the vehicle weight, while bright yellows, reds, creams, and weathered neutral tones move throughout the painting.

The Cool Bus is not simply a record of a downtown location. It is an example of how observation, photography, and imagination can combine to create a scene that feels more vivid and memorable than the original moment.
